A guide to choosing the perfect wedding rings

Selecting the perfect wedding rings is a significant step in your wedding planning. Ensuring that you find rings that symbolise your love, reflect your style, and provide lasting comfort, is something that takes careful consideration, and as such, it may be a little daunting.

We’ve asked one of the best wedding and engagement ring experts in the Cotswolds, Leon Rhodes of Wedstones, for his advice, and we’re happy to share that with you here.
When choosing your wedding rings, consider the following:

Prioritise personal style

The most crucial aspect when picking out the perfect wedding bands, is choosing a style that resonates with both of you. Whether you prefer traditional or contemporary designs, opt for rings that genuinely express your personalities.

Harmonise with your engagement rings

Your engagement ring and wedding band will likely be worn together and should therefore be the same metal. Select pieces that complement each other aesthetically. Consider the engagement ring’s design, setting, and centre stone when choosing the wedding band. For example, a solitaire diamond engagement ring with diamond shoulders might pair well with a diamond band matching your engagement ring diamonds and band with but it may also pair well with a plain band. Try lots of rings on with your engagement ring, this will ensure that when you decide on your wedding, it will be the perfect partner for your engagement ring.

Comfort is key

Wedding rings are worn daily, so comfort is hugely important. Try on various styles to determine what feels best on your finger. Consider the ring’s height and ensure it doesn’t interfere with your daily activities, a comfort fit (slight curve on the inside of the ring) is highly recommended for the most comfortable fit.

About this, Leon Rhodes from Wedstones says, “When I have couples trying on rings in our showroom, I advise them to take their time and to try on as many as they want, keep them on for a bit, move their hands like they usually do, write something down, and so on. They’re choosing a ring that will stay on their finger for the rest of their lives, so it’s enormously important that they make a choice that feels comfortable“.

Set a realistic budget

Wedding rings can vary significantly in price based on metals, stones, and craftsmanship. Establish a budget that aligns with your financial goals to avoid overspending.

Craftsmanship and quality

Beyond aesthetics, consider the quality of the craftsmanship. Choose a ring that reflects your values, whether it’s heirloom metals or ethically sourced materials. Do your research and ask questions about their sourcing practices and manufacturing processes.

Stacking options

Explore the possibility of stacking your wedding ring with other rings for a unique and personalised look. Consider the overall aesthetic you desire and whether you prefer a minimalist or bold approach

Popular wedding ring styles

  • Plain wedding rings: Timeless and versatile, plain bands offer a classic elegance.

Caring for your wedding rings
  • Clean your rings regularly with products like diamond dazzle drops and a two-ply jewellery cleaning cloth.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and excessive wear when cleaning.
  • Have your rings inspected by a jeweller annually to check for damage, worn claws and loose stones.
  • Consider insuring your rings for added peace of mind.
